During the 1920s and 1930s, Robert Cohn lived with his family in the Bronx and worked as a buyer for a manufacturer of mens ties. During the Great Depression, Mr. Cohn lost his job and sometimes journeyed into Manhattan in search of work or something that he could sell at a profit. Paula Sullivan, his daughter, recognized him in a photograph taken in Marcus & Brandies Auctioneers, which operated out of the south basement storefront at 97 Orchard Street during the late 1930s.
